Sega has sparked the Skies of Arcadia frenzy all over again, after renewing the trademark. Now, this isn’t normally a big deal, as most publishers just renew trademarks before they run out just in case. However, given Sega’s recent push to revive classic franchises, we are hoping it means something this time around.

For perspective, Sega is already working on new entries in the Virtua Fighter, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage, so it’s not unprecedented that Skies of Arcadia could make a comeback.

In a worst case scenario, this basically means nothing and it’s just Sega renewing a trademark. A simple remaster is the mid, though still fantastic, option, while the best case could be a full blown remake or sequel.

What’s Skies of Arcadia?

It’s totally acceptable that you don’t know what Skies of Arcadia is, given that the game just turned a whopping 25 years old and last saw a release in the west 22 years ago.

I originally launched in the year 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast. You played as Vyse, a young air pirate who was on a mission to save the world from the Valuan Empire.

It’s fondly remembered mostly for its setting. You take to the skies in your airship and fly it around a wide variety of worlds, which were richly detailed and incredibly varied in terms of visuals.

The characters are a close second. They’re just so darn enthusiastic. Forget the days of miserable, stoic protagonists that take themselves super seriously. These guys are a joy to be around, and help keep the game interesting well into its long running time.

In terms of combat, it’s quite similar to Chrono Trigger. Your team and your opponents take it in turns battling each other, performing various special attacks, and moving around the battlefield.

Has Skies of Arcade Ever Been Remastered?

Skies of Arcadia has never had a remaster since its initial launch, but it did get a GameCube port back in 2003. Sadly, the graphics weren’t improved over the original and it didn’t feature any new content so it really was just a straight port.
